Injuries to the face can affect both appearance and function. Evaluation focuses on the bite, jaw stability, teeth, bone and soft-tissue injuries.

What may require surgical attention

Examples include fractures of the jaws or facial bones, displaced or lost teeth, deep lacerations and injuries that alter the bite or movement of the jaw.

Timing matters

Acute facial injuries may require prompt assessment. If there is uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness or other emergency symptoms, emergency medical care is appropriate.

Reconstruction and follow-up

Treatment may involve stabilization, repair of bone or soft tissue, dental management and later reconstruction. The plan depends on the type and severity of injury.
